Evacuation and Isolation
All BESS incidents should result in the rapid electrical isolation and shutdown of the impacted system.
As the incident expands, establish hazmat isolation zones (hot, warm, and cold). All personnel must be located at least 50 feet from the battery enclosure, on the corners of the involved structure, and out of the collapse zone. For large commercial and utility-scale systems, the physical isolation zone should be expanded to 100 feet.
Evacuate the area to at least 100 meters (330 feet) outside of the cold zone, based on guidance from the DOT Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG), Guide 111 Mixed Load/Unidentified Cargo and Guide 147, Lithium Ion Batteries.
